According to Graham Oldfield, the former head chef at Chef’s Warehouse, “bao down is about bao”, “respect for good food” and cooking “the food that [he loves].”
With their shared love of Asian food and the industry experience to match it, clients of ours and husband-and-wife duo, Graham and Philippa Oldfield, have created a whirlwind in Vredehoek.
Since its opening in June this year, Bao Down has been teeming with diners eager to get a taste of their superb Asian-inspired cuisine.
The style is all in the name – based on the traditional Chinese delicacy of dumplings stuffed with various fillings and steams, with a host of other options listed on a brief yet gripping menu that includes six mains, two sides and one decadent dessert.
Plated in small and presentable portions, the flavourful dishes on offer include prawn toast served with lemon mayonnaise and spicy dressing, and the chef’s personal recommendation – the new Korean fried chicken bao.
The aim is for guests to order a variety of dishes amongst themselves and to share for a taste of everything in an intimate and unpretentious setting. Exotic bird prints adorn the walls along with antique mirrors, warm colours and crockery that has been sourced from Chinese supermarkets across Cape Town.
They have recently received their liquor license so there are plenty of drinks to complement your meal. Alternatively, if you fancy a taste of something non-alcoholic there are a variety of options, from kombucha in a host of interesting flavours to delicate herbal teas.
Pay them a visit from Tuesday to Saturday between 18:00 and 21:30 for an unforgettable and indulgent experience but ensure to book first as they are in demand.
