Pay it Forward
Inspired by a Rwandan student who is in his fourth year of law and the desire to forge futures, the Pay it Forward Foundation changes lives through funding tertiary education. It was founded in 2015 by a lovely client of ours,Catherine Crawford, alongside Nichloas Gotsell and Heino Reuling.
When volunteering at a local children’s home, Catherine observed how many of the children would fall through the cracks after leaving and understood that “it was one thing creating a lovely monetary experience for a child, but quite another supporting their future, in a sustainable way.” It then became clear to her that she could do this through funding tertiary education.
What sets this registered non-profit organisation apart is that all the proceeds go directly towards its beneficiaries and the board members voluntarily dedicate their time to raising funds.
In the spirit of paying it forward, each beneficiary is asked to carry the principle over in their own communities to grow the seed. In this way, it hopes to support the underprivileged youth by making their dreams a reality through education, mentorship and career guidance.
In 2018, four students were supported in the fields of law, genetics, graphic design and drama. The following testimony, in the words of Sosthene, proves the life-changing impact of the foundation:
“I have been a beneficiary of the Pay it Forward Foundation since its inception. For a couple of years now, I have had the privilege of knowing the founders of the foundation – Cathy, Heino and Nicolas. The three are amazing individuals who have proved over the years to be deeply and genuinely passionate about helping others – and especially those most in need of help – to pursue their dreams and realize their full potential in life.
The positive and lasting impact the Pay it Forward Foundation has had, and continues to have, upon the lives of the young men and women who are its beneficiaries bears testimony to the excellent and hard work of so many people who have chosen to support, in one way or another, the Foundation’s philosophy of ‘paying it forward’.
Being part of the Pay it Forward Foundation family has been immeasurably enriching for me in a myriad of ways: from being financially supported with my university expenses to being assigned wonderful mentors and receiving advice in relation to vacation work, to name just a few examples. Perhaps above all else, however, this experience has benefited me by instilling in me a great sense of social responsibility, which has left me convinced of the need for each one of us to help others by ‘paying it forward’ in whatever ways, and to whichever extent, we are able.”
It would like to broaden its reach to the wider community and small businesses to raise enough funds to touch more lives.
